How to connect to Sharepoint 2010 with Sharepoint Designer when server has multiple SP sites with host headers? -

hi , sorry long title. i've had management of sharepoint 2010 farm environment tossed me , while things working 1 thing not. none of our users able connect of sites in farm sharepoint designer. dreaded "server not finish request" message followed eternally helpful ms error message "object moved. object moved here."

i've dug around everywhere can think , closest explanation see may have our sp server hosting 5 sp applications, own host headers. things find seem suggest designer won't play sp servers featuring multiple host headers...but have think can't case. sharepoint encourages create utilize of host headers when setting applications.

i've tried installing designer straight onto server itself: no dice.

i've tried setting sites without host header: sites don't work (and wouldn't permanent prepare because user base of operations farm serves barely computer literate asking them utilize ip addresses armageddon)

i've checked farm settings ensure utilize of designer allowed: is.

for intranet instance, apparently have 5 separate ip addresses tracking box host 5 sp applications (if helps).

i'm developer , not server or network admin guidance or advice who's run , found prepare welcome.

first of update sharepoint designer , sharepoint latest service pack , iisreset , utilize sharepoint designer 2010 access sharepoint 2010 farm.

enable anonymous authentication sharepoint web application in iis. see kb2758431 more details, sharepoint 2013 think still valid 2010.

set registry disableloopbackcheck entry

check uls log , event viewer error messages.

here little explanation iis name resolutions of sharepoint.

you have check dns, iis host header (foreach web site) , settings client.

if there entry dns corresponding hostheader of web application must utilize name accessing sharepoint web site, seek fqdn (i.e. if entry in dns server01 , on mydomain.lan must utilize connecting: http://server01.mydomain.lan), check client ping address see if reach server.

if there no entry dns, add together hosts file hostheader of corresponding sharepoint site , seek (same thing dns, see above).
